VW Makeover

A lot has happened for Team Taste since the last post. Now that exams are out the way we have been busy preparing for our voyage. Obviously the main area for preparation is our vehicle. It is far from finished but we have some pictures of the preliminary work we have done.

There have also been a number of developments on the sponsorship front but there will more on that in the coming weeks.

Arrr Convoy

We, Arrr Taste, are not going to be going on this epic voyage alone.

Through Aston University we have found a brotherhood of young gentlemen with a penchant for adventure and this is what has led to the Arrr Convoy.

Team Taste have wheels...

And a huge nursing van to go on top.

We have finally bought our vehicle that will attempt to take us all the way to Ulaanbaatar.

It is a 1989 Volkswagen LT 31 and it used to be a nursing home van, so it is equipped with disabled access. We will be making modifications in the coming months in order to have it prepare for our forthcoming voyage but here are some photos of this beauty in its current state.

The Vehicle

Now this is the most crucial part of preparation; how are we going to get there?

The choice of vehicle is obviously a big decision, one that is made all the more difficult by the introduction of the 1 litre rule.

At this point we have not decided what will be taking us the distance but we have come up with a rather varied shortlist.

The Route

We have now spent some time looking into where we want to stop on the way. Furthermore we have set a basic timeline for our journey, so we know roughly where we want to be by a certain date in order to achieve our aim of arriving in Ulaanbaatar the weekend of August 23rd.

Obviously we cannot anticipate the unexpected and that is an integral part of the adventure. Also trying to plan where we are going to stay in places such as Kazakhstan is so unrealistic and we do not want the trip to feel like a package holiday with everything planned in advance.

However, we have a list of cities that will dictate the early part of the trip through Europe and they are as follows;

Bruges (Be), Amsterdam (Nl), Copenhagen (Dk), Stockholm (Se), Umea, Oulu (Fi), Tampere, Helsinki, St Petersburg (Ru) Moscow, Samara, Chelyabinsk.

From there it will be more of a mystery...

The Background

We are a 4 young british gentlemen who are headed on an adventure which will take us half way around the globe. We will be setting off on July 19th from Hyde Park, London with the aim of reaching Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. On the way we will be travelling up the west coast of Europe, through Scandinavia and across Russia and Kazakhstan before reaching the Mongolian border. Then we will only have the delights of the Altai mountains, the Gobi desert and Mongolian heartlands between us and our destination. The basis of the trip is to raise money for charities that work predominantly in Mongolia, such as CAMDA and Mercy Corps Mongolia. The added twist in the story is that we have to try and complete this journey in a 1 litre car! Will we make it? Your guess is as good as ours...
